Matthias Schleiden’s Theory of History: Philosophy, Politics, and Popular Science, 1842-1882

How did scientists in the tumultuous decades around the European revolutions of 1848 work to resolve the existential tensions between their identities as truth seekers and as citizens? This talk explores this question through the renowned botanist and cell theorist Matthias Schleiden’s reflections on the scientist’s role in shaping history.
