Research Seminar November 6th: Sander Gilman (Liberal Arts and Sciences and Psychiatry, Emory University, Atlanta) - The Posture of the Soul

I shall examine how ideas of human posture from the Greeks and the Jews to the Enlightenment shape the representation of the soul in the West.  The soul becomes the representation of the immaterial aspects of the upright body that too must be seen as upright to be human. My examples will be from both textual and visual sources.
