Dan David Society of Fellows

The Dan David Prize, endowed by the Dan David Foundation and headquartered at Tel Aviv University, was founded in 2001 by entrepreneur and philanthropist Dan David. In anticipation of the Prize’s 20th anniversary in 2021, the Dan David Foundation set out to adapt the Prize to the challenges of our times, while honoring the intellectual passions of Dan David, who was an ardent supporter of historical and archaeological research. While global investment in the humanities is declining, particularly in history and related fields, the major social and political challenges of the present only emphasize the importance of studying the past for the preservation of a free and democratic discourse. With this in mind, the reimagined Dan David Prize and its affiliated programs now celebrate scholars and practitioners whose work illuminates the human past and can enrich public debate with a deeper understanding of history. Ten percent of the Prize purse is dedicated to scholarships for outstanding postdoctoral researchers in all fields that study the past, including – but not limited to – history, history of the arts, archaeology and anthropology.
