The Yael Levin Writer-in-Residence program hosting Vietnamese-American graphic artist and writer GB Tran

The Department of English and American Studies at TAU is proud to host the Vietnamese-American graphic artist and writer GB Tran as this year’s Yael Levin writer in residence.  Tran is the author of the brilliantly drawn, innovatively composed and boundary-crossing graphic memoir, Vietnamerica (2011). The memoir follows the family’s turbulent journey through war-torn Vietnam to the US, as it explores the complex identity of a second generation migrant-refugee who connects worlds and cultures in the attempt to suture familial wounds.

ג׳.ב. טראן הוא סופר ואמן גרפי.  ספרו הנודע ביותר הוא הרומן הגרפי (או ליתר דיוק (memoir  וייטנאמריקה (2011). זהו סיפור על מלחמה, עקירה והגירה בו חושף טראן במכחול עדין את הסיפור המשפחתי שלו. הוא בוחן את הזהות המורכבת לא רק של המהגר-פליט, אלא גם של הדור השני, שמנסה לגשר בין עולמות ותרבויות. טראן משתמש היטב בפוטנציאל הסטרוקטוראלי והפורמלי של המדיום הגראפי כדי ליצור נרטיב חדשני, נועז וחוצה-קווים. בו-זמנית הוא נאבק בסטראוטיפים על וייטנאם שחקוקים עמוק בהוויה האמריקנית וחושף את המכנה המשותף האנושי המסתתר מתחת לפני השטח של קונפליקטים פוליטיים, מלחמות (ע"ע מלחמת וייטנאם) ויותר מכל סטיגמות נוקשות בכל הקשור "לאחר".
