Academic Background:

Dr. Galit Haddad is a historian and scholar of contemporary French history with an expertise on the French Soldiers’ experience during the two World Wars. Since 2016 she serves as Research Associate in the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center at Tel Aviv University. She is also a Research Associate in the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris (EHESS), a Chateaubriand Research Fellow of the French government (2019-2020), and a member of the advisory committee of historians of the International Research Center at the Historial de la Grande Guerre in France.

Dr. Haddad’s latest research focuses on the French-Jewish soldiers’ experience of German captivity in the shadow of the French defeat (1940-1945). In particular, she has uncovered the complex dynamics of Jewish identity, anti-Semitism and racism, and anti-Jewish abuse in the German Prisoner-of-War camps. In addition, she has documented the Vichy regime’s multifaceted diplomacy and policy vis-à-vis the French-Jewish captives in the Oflags and Stalags, bringing new insights to the rapidly evolving historiography on Vichy and its Jewish policy.

Her dissertation (TAU and EHESS, Paris) which focused on the French Soldiers’ protest movements during the Great War was published in 2012 (1914-1919. Ceux qui protestaient [1914-1919. Those Who Protested], Paris, Les Belles Lettres with a preface by Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau). Her seminal research and articles have since then focused on the French military personnel’s combatant experience with a focus on the trenches experience and the disobedience trends in the ranks of the French army (les mutineries de 1917). She has also carried out ground-breaking research on issues of civilian pacifism such as her work on French Women’s pacifist rebellion and labor movement protests in World War I. 

Dr. Haddad has conducted her research with the institutional support of leading academic institutions and research centers in France, primarily the French Institute of Political Science in Paris (Sciences Po) and the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) where she has taught, lectured, and directed international research projects.
