I’m a historian of economy, society, ideas and culture in early modern Britain and its Empire. My research focuses on informal economies, their relationship with formal economic institutions and daily economic life. I have worked on the history of non-governmental money issued by a variety of actors in England, from pub owners to city corporations, between the 17th and the 19th centuries. My current project looks at coinage issued by the English East India Company. I explore how these privately issued currencies were used as a tool by the company to gain control over the Indian subcontinent. My research has been supported by the Azrieli Foundation, George L. Mosse Program, Mandel-Scholion Center at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Max Weber Foundation.
Before joining the faculty at Tel Aviv University, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Martin Buber Society of Fellows and in the interdisciplinary program for research on Markets, Ethics, and the Law at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Tel Aviv University. My PhD was completed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
