General Information

Prof. Yossef Schwartz is a Barbara and Bert Cohn Professor for the History and Philosophy of Science at the Cohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas, which he directed from 2009 until 2015. In 2016-2020 he was the head of the School of Philosophy, Linguistics and Science Studies at Tel Aviv University. He held the Martin Buber Chair for Jewish philosophy of religion at the department of evangelical theology, Goethe University of Frankfurt/Main, 2000-2002. Further teaching/research positions at the Department of Medieval Studies, Central European University, Budapest, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Munich Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU). He was research fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at UPenn, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, the Center for the History of Knowledge, Zurich, and at the Goethe Universiyu, Frankfurt\Main (Jochen Hückmann-Stiftungsgastprofessur für Forschungsexzellenz).

Among his major research projects was the ERC funded study of translation of "Latin philosophy into Hebrew"; an ISF funded project dedicated to Christian Hebraism and Christian Cabbala; a GIF-funded project, together with Prof. Andreas Speer from the Thomas Institute in Cologne concentrating on the medieval Latin Translation of Moses Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed. He also dedicated a series of studies to modern German-Jewish authors such as Salomon Maimon, Ernst Cassirer, Gustav Landauer, Gershom Scholem, Martin Buber, Hanah Arendt, Margarete Susman, and Franz Rosenzweig, concentrating mainly on their historiographical concept of pre-modern culture and the process of secularization.

Main interest today lies on the study of European medieval philosophy, science and culture, especially in its inter-cultural dimensions. The changing role of medieval ideas in modern culture and modern scholarship. Recent research concentrates on Christian Hebraism in late medieval and early modern Europe and on Jewish European Hebrew reception of Scholastic ideas.
