Admissions and Application
Admission Requirements
Applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree in any field are eligible for admission to this master’s program at Tel Aviv University. Admission to this track does not require prior competency in a Middle Eastern language.
Candidates with a bachelor’s degree average below 80 (or the equivalent under international grade comparison) may be admitted in exceptional cases, subject to the discretion of the head of the program and provided that such admission does not conflict with the decisions of the University’s Master’s Degree Committee.
Preparatory courses:
Candidates whose bachelor’s degree is not in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (unless they have already completed comparable coursework) will be required to complete online supplementary courses during the first semester of the program. It should be emphasized that the following supplementary courses do not count towards the credit requirements to complete the master’s degree:
-
The Emergence of the Modern Middle East (Coursera): Prof. Asher Susser
-
Arab-Islamic History: From Tribes to Empires (edX): Prof. Miri Shefer-Mossensohn
In addition, candidates who are accepted without competency in a Middle Eastern language are invited to take a language course. In this framework, we strongly recommend students take an Arabic course within the program or learn Hebrew. Language courses do not count towards the credit requirements for the degree. Would like to pursue and apply for the M.A. thesis track (and/or Ph.D.) must demonstrate a competency in a Middle Eastern language.
