The Yael Levin Writer-In-Residence Program

The Program was established to commemorate Yael Levin and her love for English literature. The Program enables the English Department to host each year a celebrated writer of the English speaking world. During his/her stay the author will give a public lecture, address University forums, teach student workshops and meet with interested circles to share his/her work. The visit can also provide an occasion for translating this writer's work into Hebrew.

Born in Haifa, Yael Levin graduated with a degree in English Literature from the University of Beirut. She taught English at the Re’ali School in Haifa, and then embarked on a long successful diplomatic career. Her last post was as the second to the Israeli ambassador in Brussels, a rare position for a woman at that time. She retired at a relatively young age for family reasons. English language and literature were her lifelong passions. She cherished her rich and exciting collection of English books which literally filled her small flat in Jerusalem. She passed away in 2000 in Jerusalem at the age of 89.
