Prof. Yosef Schwartz

Prof. Yosef Schwartz is the holder of the Barbara and Bert Cohen Chair in the History and Philosophy of Science, at the Cohen Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas at Tel Aviv University. He served as the head of the institute from 2009 to 2015, and from 2015 to 2020 he headed the School of Philosophy, Linguistics and Science Studies.

His research focuses on the intellectual history and sociology of knowledge and its institutions in late medieval and early modern Europe, with a special emphasis on knowledge transitions and textual transitions between different cultures and languages. He has studied late medieval Christian scholastic thought and the formation of university knowledge institutions and various knowledge communities, Latin and Hebrew scholasticism, Jewish and Christian mystical movements in the Middle Ages and early modern times, Christian Hebraism and Christian Kabbalah. He has also dealt with patterns of secularization and the way they are reflected in European historiography, Jewish and Christian, in the modern era.
